Airalo is the best-known travel eSIM and one of the cheapest for a fixed data allowance in Vietnam, with 5 GB for 30 days around 11 dollars. It rides on Vinaphone only, so it is a city-and-coast eSIM rather than a mountain one, and its "unlimited" plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day.

Airalo's Vietnam plans are good value when you know how much data you need. The 5 GB / 30 days plan at about 11 dollars is enough for maps, Grab and messaging on a two-week trip; the 20 GB / 30 days at 29 dollars covers heavy photo backups and some video. The unlimited line starts at 11.50 dollars for 3 days and is honest about its cap: 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
The weak point is the network. Airalo's Vietnam eSIM connects to Vinaphone (VNPT), which is excellent in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and along the coast, but thinner than Viettel in the northern mountains and the central highlands. If your route includes the Ha Giang loop or trekking around Sapa, pick a Viettel-based or multi-network eSIM, or buy a Viettel SIM on arrival.
Complaints follow the same pattern as every big eSIM brand: the eSIM installs but never gets data, usually because the line was not selected for data or roaming was left off. Our installation steps below cover those cases. Refunds for a change of plans come back as Airmoney credit, not cash.

Installing a Airalo eSIM for Vietnam
- Check that your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked (Settings → About → "Digital SIM" or "EID" on Android, "Add eSIM" on iPhone).
- Buy the plan on Airalo's site or app and install it at home on Wi-Fi: scan the QR code or let the app add it.
- Label the line "Vietnam", keep your home SIM for calls and SMS, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only.

Airalo connects to Vinaphone. That choice matters more than the brand. Viettel has the widest coverage, especially in the northern mountains, the central highlands and the islands; Vinaphone and MobiFone are excellent in cities and on the coast; Vietnamobile is weak outside the big cities.
Is Airalo's unlimited plan really unlimited?
No. Airalo applies a daily fair-use cap: 3 GB → 1 Mbps. Light use is never affected; video and tethering are.
