When to Go to Vietnam — Climate, Temperatures & Weather

Vietnam stretches over 1,650 km from north to south, crossing several climate zones. There is no single "best season" for the whole country — the ideal time depends on which region you plan to visit. This guide breaks down the climate region by region and month by month so you can plan the perfect trip.

Vietnam's Three Climate Zones

Vietnam is divided into three distinct climate zones that rarely follow the same seasonal pattern at the same time.

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) has four distinct seasons. Summers (May–September) are hot and humid with frequent rain. Winters (November–March) can be cool and even cold — Sapa sees frost between December and February. Spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) are the most pleasant periods.

Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Phong Nha) has a more complex climate, influenced by two different monsoon systems. From June to August, the region is hot and dry (35–38 °C). From September to January, northeast monsoon winds bring heavy rain and occasional typhoons. The sweet spot is February to May.

Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) has only two seasons: a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. It stays warm year-round, between 25 and 35 °C. The dry season is the most comfortable time to visit.

Best Time to Visit by Region

Hanoi & Northern Vietnam: October–April. Avoid the muggy heat of summer (May–September) and the grey, drizzly days of January–February. October and November offer golden light, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures around 25 °C.

Sapa & the Northern Highlands: September–November (rice harvest, terraced fields at their greenest) and March–May (blooming flowers, mild temperatures). Avoid December–February if you are sensitive to cold — temperatures can drop below 5 °C at night.

Ha Long Bay: October–April. The bay is prone to fog and rain in summer. From November to March, water is calm and visibility is excellent. Avoid June–August if typhoon risk concerns you.

Da Nang & Hoi An: February–May. The weather is warm and sunny before the monsoon hits. Hoi An floods frequently in October and November — check forecasts carefully.

Hue & Phong Nha: February–August. These cities receive heavy rain from October to January. March–May is ideal for Phong Nha's caves.

Ho Chi Minh City & the South: November–April (dry season). The city is bearable year-round, but the rainy season brings daily afternoon downpours from May to October.

Phu Quoc: November–March. The island's west coast is sheltered during this period. From May to October, the sea is rough and many beach resorts close.

Month-by-Month Summary

January: Cool and dry in the north (15–20 °C in Hanoi). South is at its best. Tet (Lunar New Year) falls in January or February — expect crowds and higher prices.

February: Still cool in the north, perfect in the center (Da Nang ~25 °C). South is excellent.

March: Warming up everywhere. Great time to visit Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. Hoi An at its best.

April: Hot and dry in the center (Hue, Da Nang). Still comfortable in the north. South getting warmer.

May: Heat intensifies. Rainy season begins in the south. Central Vietnam still dry but very hot.

June–August: Peak summer. North is rainy and hot. Center is blazingly hot and mostly dry. South is in full rainy season. Still enjoyable if you accept afternoon showers.

September: Typhoon season peaks in the center. North starts to cool down — excellent for Sapa. South rains continue.

October: Beautiful in the north (Hanoi, Ha Long). Heavy rains and flood risk in Hoi An and Hue. South still rainy.

November: Probably the best all-around month. North is cool and clear. Center transitions — rain easing. South dry season begins.

December: Peak tourist season. North can be cold (10–15 °C in Hanoi). Center dry and pleasant. South is ideal.

Temperatures at a Glance

Hanoi: 17 °C in January → 33 °C in June. Annual average: 24 °C. Humidity is high year-round.

Ho Chi Minh City: 26–35 °C year-round. Very little temperature variation between seasons.

Da Nang: 21 °C in January → 33 °C in July. Typhoon risk September–November.

Sapa: 5 °C in January → 20 °C in June. Can get frost in winter. Snow is rare but not unheard of.

Hoi An: 21 °C in January → 29 °C in July. Flooding possible October–November.

Typhoon Season

Typhoons affect mainly Central Vietnam between September and November, with peak risk in October. In recent years, typhoons have also increasingly impacted Northern Vietnam in late summer.

Southern Vietnam rarely sees direct typhoon hits, though tropical storms can bring heavy rain.

If you plan to visit Central Vietnam in October, monitor forecasts closely. Travel insurance covering weather disruption is strongly recommended.

Practical Tips

Pack layers for the north in winter. A Hanoi January can feel surprisingly cold for travelers arriving from tropical Southeast Asia.

Light waterproof clothing is useful year-round. Even in the "dry" season, brief showers are common.

Book Ha Long Bay cruises for the calm season (Nov–Mar). Rough seas in summer can limit access to caves and swimming areas.

Tet holiday (January or February) is culturally unmissable but logistically challenging — transport and accommodation book up months in advance and prices spike.

The shoulder seasons (March–April and October–November) offer the best compromise: fewer crowds, lower prices, and generally good weather across multiple regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Vietnam overall?

November and March are generally the best months. November brings dry weather to the south and the center while the north is cool and clear. March is warm and pleasant almost everywhere.

Is Vietnam worth visiting during the rainy season?

Yes. Rain is usually concentrated in afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. Prices are lower, crowds thinner, and landscapes vivid green. Just pack a light rain jacket.

When should I avoid Vietnam?

Avoid Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) in October–November due to typhoon and flood risk. Avoid Ha Long Bay cruises in July–August due to rough seas and reduced visibility.

Can I visit all of Vietnam in one trip regardless of season?

Vietnam's length means no single month is perfect everywhere. The best strategy is to travel north-to-south (or south-to-north) and time each region accordingly. A two-week trip can easily hit dry weather in multiple zones.

What is the weather like during Tet (Lunar New Year)?

Tet falls in January or February. The north is cool (15–20 °C), the center mild, and the south warm and dry. Weather is generally fine, but services may be reduced and transport is packed — book everything well in advance.

Does Vietnam get very cold in winter?

Northern Vietnam does get noticeably cool in December–February, with Hanoi dropping to 12–15 °C. Sapa can see frost and occasional snow. Southern Vietnam stays warm (25–30 °C) year-round.
