In Hanoi, buses and limousines pick up in the Old Quarter, at the company office or at your hotel.
The road runs via Hải Phòng to the Gót pier on Cát Hải island; a ferry of about 15 minutes crosses to Cái Viềng on Cát Bà, where a bus or van takes you on to Cát Bà town and the harbour hotels.
Sleeper, cabin or limousine?
A sleeper bus has three rows of reclining berths on two levels, the cheapest choice for a night ride. A cabin bus gives each passenger (or couple) a closed pod with a curtain or door, a mattress and a charging socket. A limousine is a 9 to 22-seat van with wide leather seats: faster, fewer stops, often with hotel pick-up, but made for daytime trips.
Booking tips
- Ferries run less often in the evening and can stop in a storm: take a morning or early-afternoon departure.
- Coming from Hạ Long? Ferries also cross from Tuần Châu to Gia Luận, in the north of Cát Bà.
- Bring a light jacket: the air conditioning runs cold all night.
- Shoes come off at the door of sleeper and cabin buses; a bag is handed out for them.
- Keep your passport, phone and cash in a small bag that stays in your berth.
