Where is Vietnam? Location, map, regions and how to get there

Vietnam sits on the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia, but a one-line answer does not help much when planning a trip. The country is a thin, 1,650 km strip, and that shape decides how far apart the sights are, when the weather works and how many days a route needs. This guide gives the location first, then what the map means in practice, using the 2025 administrative changes that most online maps and articles still ignore.

Where is Vietnam? The short answer

Vietnam is in Southeast Asia, on the eastern coast of the Indochinese Peninsula. It borders China to the north, Laos to the west and Cambodia to the southwest, with the South China Sea to the east and south.

The country runs from about 8°34'N to 23°24'N and 102°08'E to 109°28'E. That latitude span is why a single "best time to visit" answer does not exist.

Item Detail
Area About 331,000 km²
Population Just over 100 million (15th in the world)
Capital Hanoi
Largest city Ho Chi Minh City
Time zone UTC+7, no daylight saving
Currency Vietnamese dong (VND)
Calling code +84
Coastline About 3,260 km
Highest point Fansipan, 3,143 m

Vietnam is slightly smaller than Germany and a little larger than Italy. The population passed 100 million in 2023, which makes it the third most populous country in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and the Philippines.

Vietnam on the map: borders, neighbors and the sea

Land borders

Three countries touch Vietnam by land. China lies to the north along roughly 1,300 km of border. Laos runs down the western side for about 2,160 km. Cambodia meets the southwest for about 1,230 km.

Foreigners can cross at a limited set of international checkpoints, and not every crossing accepts the e-visa. Confirm your specific port before booking transport.

The coast and the sea

Vietnam has about 3,260 km of mainland coastline and more than 2,700 islands. Locally the water is called Biển Đông, or East Sea. English-language maps usually say South China Sea.

The Paracel (Hoàng Sa) and Spratly (Trường Sa) island groups are disputed, and maps showing the nine-dash line are politically sensitive inside Vietnam. None of this affects a normal tourist itinerary, but printing or displaying the wrong map can cause friction.

Who is near, who is not

Thailand does not border Vietnam. Laos and Cambodia sit between them, which is why the overland route from Bangkok takes a full day or more.

Hainan in China is across the Gulf of Tonkin. The Philippines and Malaysia lie across the sea. From Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, direct flights reach Bangkok in about 2 hours, Siem Reap in about 1 hour 15 minutes, Luang Prabang in about 2 hours and Hong Kong in about 2 hours 30 minutes. That makes Vietnam a practical hub for a multi-country trip.

Shape and size: why distances surprise first-time visitors

Vietnam is an S-shape. It stretches about 1,650 km from north to south, narrows to roughly 50 km around Quang Binh province, and widens to about 600 km in the far north.

The country has two rice baskets, the Red River Delta in the north and the Mekong Delta in the south, joined by a thin central strip. In between lie the northern mountains, the Truong Son range, the Central Highlands and the Mekong plain.

Hanoi sits in the north, not in the center. Da Nang is the geographic midpoint. The straight-line distance from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is about 1,150 km, and the road route is roughly 1,700 km.

Travelers routinely book a 5-day north-to-south trip. That is about 340 km of travel per day. It does not work.

North, Central and South: what each region is like

Northern Vietnam

Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, Ninh Binh with Tam Coc and Trang An, Sapa and the far north including Ha Giang. The north has four seasons, a genuinely cool winter and near-freezing nights in the mountains. Allow 4 to 6 days minimum.

Central Vietnam

Phong Nha, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, the Cham Islands, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang. This is the heritage and beach belt, and also the typhoon belt. Allow 5 to 7 days if you include Phong Nha and Hue.

Southern Vietnam and the Mekong

Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi, the Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Dalat in the highlands. Hot all year with a clear wet and dry season. Allow 4 to 6 days, more with an island.

Official regions versus how travelers divide the map

Vietnamese statistics use six socio-economic regions, and older sources list eight. For planning, the North, Central and South split is what matters. It maps onto climate, food and transport far better than the administrative version.

Region Key places Character Best months Minimum days
North Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Sapa, Ha Giang Four seasons, mountains, capital Mar-Apr, Oct-Nov 4-6
Central Phong Nha, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang Heritage, beaches, typhoon belt Feb-Aug 5-7
South Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phu Quoc, Dalat Hot year-round, delta and islands Dec-Apr 4-6

The 2025 province mergers: why older maps are wrong

In 2025 Vietnam reduced its provincial-level units from 63 to 34: 28 provinces and 6 centrally governed cities. The district level was abolished entirely. Most travel sites still cite the old figures.

What changed for a traveler is paperwork, not geography. Addresses on tickets, hotel listings and Google Maps labels may not match what you booked.

Place travelers know Old province Current unit
Hoi An Quang Nam Da Nang city
Vung Tau, Con Dao Ba Ria-Vung Tau Ho Chi Minh City
Nha Trang Khanh Hoa Khanh Hoa (enlarged)
Da Lat Lam Dong Lam Dong
Phu Quoc Kien Giang An Giang
Ninh Binh Ninh Binh Ninh Binh (expanded)

The cities and sights have not moved. Only the administrative labels around them changed. Verify current names before publishing dates, because secondary details are still being updated.

Around Hanoi

Ba Dinh Square sits in central Hanoi and holds Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, which closes for annual maintenance, so check dates before you go. Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter are a short walk away. Ba Vi National Park is about 50 to 60 km west of the center, 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Co Loa Citadel is about 20 km north. Ninh Binh and Tam Coc are about 90 to 100 km south, 2 to 2.5 hours. Ha Long Bay is about 150 to 170 km east.

Ho Chi Minh City and the south

Dong Khoi Street runs through District 1 as the old French-era shopping street. Ben Thanh Market is also in District 1, with a separate night market outside. The Cu Chi tunnels are about 60 km northwest. Can Gio and its Monkey Island are about 50 km southeast. Mekong Delta towns such as My Tho and Can Tho are 1.5 to 3.5 hours by road.

Central coast and highlands

The Cham Islands sit about 15 km off Hoi An, reachable by speedboat, and rough seas cancel crossings in the wrong months. Hoi An, My Son, Hue's Imperial City, Phong Nha and Da Lat fill out the center and highlands.

Clearing up "Monkey Island"

At least three places carry the name. Can Gio near Ho Chi Minh City, Hon Lao near Nha Trang, and Cat Ba's Monkey Island in Lan Ha Bay. They are hundreds of kilometers apart. Do not feed or handle the macaques at any of them.

Farther afield

Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Sapa, the Ha Giang loop, Cat Ba and Mui Ne all sit outside the main north-south corridor and each need a dedicated detour of at least 2 days.

How to get to Vietnam

Flight times

Direct flights from Western Europe to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang run about 11 to 13 hours. From the US West Coast expect 15 to 17 hours with one stop. From Australia, about 8 to 9 hours. From Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul or Tokyo, 2 to 6 hours.

Time differences from Vietnam: Paris +5 or +6, London +6 or +7, New York +11 or +12, Los Angeles +14 or +15.

Long Thanh airport near Ho Chi Minh City is under development. Do not plan around it until it opens.

Entry rules in brief

The e-visa covers up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, at USD 25 or 50. A list of mostly European nationalities gets 45 days visa-free. Phu Quoc has its own 30-day visa-free policy. Passports need at least 6 months of validity.

Policies change often. Check the official e-visa portal before booking, and see the dedicated visa guide for the full process.

Overland entry

From Cambodia: Moc Bai, Xa Xia and the Mekong river route. From Laos: Lao Bao, Cau Treo and Tay Trang. From China: Lao Cai, Dong Dang and Mong Cai. Bus "packages" sold at guesthouses are a common source of scams, and not every crossing accepts the e-visa. Confirm both before you travel.

Getting around: distances and travel times

City pair Distance Flight Train Bus Price (VND)
Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City 1,150 km 2h 30-33h Not advised 1,200,000-3,500,000 (USD 48-140)
Hanoi - Da Nang 760 km 1h 20m 15-17h 14-16h 700,000-2,000,000 (USD 28-80)
Da Nang - Hoi An 30 km - - 45m 100,000-200,000 (USD 4-8)
Hanoi - Ha Long 160 km - - 2.5h 200,000-500,000 (USD 8-20)
Hanoi - Ninh Binh 95 km - 2h 2h 150,000-400,000 (USD 6-16)
Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho 170 km - - 3.5h 150,000-350,000 (USD 6-14)
Ho Chi Minh City - Da Lat 300 km 1h - 7h 250,000-600,000 (USD 10-24)

Three honest points. Domestic flights are cheap but delays are common in typhoon season. Sleeper trains are slow but the Hue to Da Nang stretch is genuinely scenic. Motorbike touring needs the correct license, insurance and, in border areas, a local permit.

Book an open-jaw route: arrive in Hanoi, leave from Ho Chi Minh City. It avoids backtracking and saves a full day.

Climate by location: when to go to each region

There is no single best month. The north-south span creates different seasons at the same time.

North

Best in March to April and October to November. December to February is cold and misty. June to August is hot with heavy rain.

Central

Best in February to August. Typhoon and flood risk peaks from roughly September to November, especially in Hue, Hoi An and Quang Binh. Flexible plans and insurance matter here.

South

Best in December to April. May to October brings short heavy afternoon showers, not constant rain.

Highlands and islands

Da Lat is cooler year-round. Phu Quoc is best from November to April. Con Dao runs roughly December to August.

Month North Central South
Jan-Mar Cold, misty Cool, mixed Dry, hot
Apr-Jun Warm, good Good Hot, wet start
Jul-Sep Hot, rainy Hot, typhoon risk Wet
Oct-Dec Cool, good Wet, typhoon peak Dry, best

Hanoi's winter average is not 7 to 8°C. That range describes the coldest nights. Daytime averages sit closer to 17 to 20°C.

Where Vietnam's history happened: the war, the capitals and the oldest cities

Where was the Vietnam War fought?

Across the whole country and into Laos and Cambodia. The 17th parallel and Ben Hai River divided North and South at the Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri. The Ho Chi Minh Trail ran along the western border. Major visitor sites include Hue, Khe Sanh, Vinh Moc, Cu Chi, Saigon and Hanoi.

Unexploded ordnance remains in central provinces. Stay on marked paths and use only established sites.

The two capitals

Hanoi served as the capital of North Vietnam and then of the unified country from 1976. Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam until 1975. Hue was the imperial capital from 1802 to 1945.

Oldest city or town

It depends on the definition. Hanoi has been a capital since Thang Long in 1010, and Co Loa dates to the 3rd century BC. Hoa Lu was the first capital of an independent Dai Co Viet in 968. Hoi An is the best-preserved old trading port.

Safety, health and practical risks tied to geography

Vietnam is generally safe for visitors. The main risks are road traffic, motorbike bag snatching in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, taxi and ride scams, and typhoons and floods in the central region.

Dengue risk peaks in the wet season, so use repellent. Tap water is not safe to drink. Air pollution in Hanoi can be severe from October to March, so check the AQI. Health advice should come from your national health authority.

For background, noncommunicable diseases such as stroke and ischemic heart disease account for most deaths nationally according to WHO data. That is context, not a travel risk.

Buy insurance that covers motorbike use and medical evacuation.

Costs and a simple way to plan routes by location

Budget travel runs about 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 VND (USD 40 to 60) per day. Mid-range runs 2,000,000 to 3,500,000 VND (USD 80 to 140). Exchange rates hover around 25,000 to 26,000 VND per USD.

Three route templates driven by the map:

  • 7 days in the north: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long or Lan Ha.
  • 14 days north to south: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City.
  • 21 days: add the Mekong, Da Lat or Phu Quoc.

Each region needs a minimum of 3 to 4 days. Trying to cover the whole country in under 10 days means spending most of it in transit.

Map mistakes to avoid

Assuming Hanoi is mid-country. Treating Thailand as a neighbor. Booking Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City by bus or train on a short trip. Confusing the several Monkey Islands. Using pre-2025 province names for transport searches. Ignoring the central typhoon season. Fix these six and most itinerary problems disappear before you book anything.
