Vietnam in 10 Days: The Realistic North-to-Center Route

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first Vietnam trip. It's long enough to see genuinely different regions, short enough to keep momentum, and matches the holiday allowance of most international visitors. The mistake most travelers make is trying to squeeze in Saigon and the Mekong Delta as well — that adds two domestic flights and turns a relaxed trip into a logistics exercise.

Vietnam in 10 Days: The Realistic North-to-Center Route

The route below covers Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay (or Lan Ha Bay), Hue, and Hoi An. One internal flight. Real travel times. Real opening hours. Pacing that allows for jet lag, weather, and the occasional lazy morning.

Why North-to-Center Beats Trying to See Everything

Vietnam is over 1,650 km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Domestic flights are cheap but each one eats half a day once airport transfers, security, and delays are factored in. A 10-day trip that includes Saigon typically loses 1.5 full days to airports.

The North-to-Center route delivers the strongest contrast in landscapes and culture without backtracking: imperial history in Hue, ancient trading port architecture in Hoi An, karst scenery in Ninh Binh and Halong, and the chaotic charm of Hanoi's Old Quarter. The flight from Hue or Danang to your departure city (or onward to Bangkok/Singapore) closes the loop neatly.

Tip: If a beach finale matters more than imperial Hue, swap Hue out and give Hoi An four nights instead. An Bang Beach in March–August is excellent.

The 10-Day Breakdown with Real Timings

Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi

Most long-haul flights land at Noi Bai (HAN) between 5 a.m. and noon. A Grab to the Old Quarter costs 350,000–420,000 VND (US$14–17) and takes 40–55 minutes depending on traffic.

Check in, shower, resist the urge to nap past 3 p.m. Walk to Hoan Kiem Lake at golden hour, eat bun cha for dinner (try Bun Cha Huong Lien or Dac Kim), and be in bed by 10 p.m.

Day 2 — Hanoi Old Quarter and history

  • Morning: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex (closes 11 a.m., shut Mondays/Fridays). Arrive by 8 a.m.
  • Late morning: Temple of Literature (40,000 VND / US$1.60).
  • Afternoon: Hoa Lo Prison (50,000 VND / US$2) — small but powerful.
  • Evening: Train Street coffee at the safe, gated section near Phung Hung. Train passes around 7:15 p.m. Mon–Fri.

Day 3 — Ninh Binh day trip

Ninh Binh works equally well as a day trip or an overnight. For 10 days, a day trip wins.

The 8:00 a.m. limousine van from Hanoi reaches Tam Coc by 10:15 a.m. (260,000 VND / US$10.50). Spend the morning on a Trang An boat tour (250,000 VND / US$10, 3 hours, the three-cave route is best), lunch on goat meat near Hoa Lu, climb Hang Mua's 500 steps before sunset, and return to Hanoi by 8:30 p.m.

Tip: Trang An is genuinely better than Tam Coc. Longer route, more caves, fewer aggressive vendors.

Day 4 — Transfer to Halong/Lan Ha Bay

Shuttle buses to Halong leave Hanoi at 7:30–8:30 a.m. and reach the harbor by 11:30 a.m. Most cruises board at noon. Lan Ha Bay (accessed via Got harbor on Cat Ba) is less crowded than central Halong and worth the slightly longer transfer.

A solid 2-day/1-night cruise in 2026 costs 3,800,000–5,500,000 VND (US$152–220) per person all-inclusive. Avoid anything under 3,000,000 VND — those are the boats with food poisoning reviews.

Day 5 — Cruise return and night train south

Cruise disembarks around 11 a.m. Back in Hanoi by 4 p.m. The reunification express SE19 train to Hue departs Hanoi at 7:30 p.m. and arrives Hue around 8:30 a.m. — a soft sleeper berth costs 1,150,000 VND (US$46).

This is the night that decides whether the trip feels efficient or rushed. The train saves a hotel night, a flight, and a half-day. Alternatively, fly Hanoi–Hue (1h 20m, from 1,400,000 VND / US$56) the next morning and lose a half-day.

Day 6 — Hue imperial city

Arrive Hue, drop bags (most hotels allow early check-in by 10 a.m. with prior notice), shower, eat bun bo Hue at Quan Cam or Ba Do.

  • Morning: Imperial Citadel (200,000 VND / US$8). Allow 3 hours minimum.
  • Afternoon: Tu Duc Tomb and Minh Mang Tomb by Grab car (the combined ticket is 420,000 VND / US$17).
  • Evening: Dong Ba Market walk and dinner at a riverside spot on Le Loi.

Day 7 — Hue to Hoi An via the Hai Van Pass

Skip the train for this leg. The 4-hour private car transfer via Hai Van Pass (1,500,000–1,900,000 VND / US$60–76 for the car, not per person) with stops at Lang Co Beach, Hai Van summit, and Marble Mountains is one of the best half-days in Vietnam.

Arrive Hoi An by 3 p.m. The Ancient Town lights up at dusk — be there for it.

Day 8 — Hoi An Ancient Town

Buy the Ancient Town ticket (120,000 VND / US$4.80, covers 5 heritage sites). Visit the Japanese Covered Bridge early (7–8 a.m.) before crowds.

  • Tailor visit: order in the morning, first fitting by evening. A custom shirt costs 600,000–900,000 VND (US$24–36) at reputable shops like Yaly or BeBe.
  • Cooking class options run 750,000–1,100,000 VND (US$30–44).
  • Lantern boat ride after dark: 150,000 VND (US$6) for the boat, 20,000 VND per lantern.

Day 9 — An Bang Beach or My Son

Choice depends on weather and interest.

  • My Son Sanctuary: Cham ruins, 1 hour west. Go at 5:30 a.m. opening to avoid heat and tour buses. Entry 150,000 VND (US$6).
  • An Bang Beach: 15-minute bike ride from the Ancient Town. Soul Kitchen and Sound of Silence are the established beach restaurants.

Final tailor fitting in the afternoon. Last lantern-lit dinner.

Day 10 — Departure from Danang

Hoi An to Danang International Airport (DAD) is 45 minutes, 350,000 VND (US$14) by Grab. DAD has direct flights to Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Doha, and most major Asian hubs in 2026.

Hue vs. Hoi An: Where to Spend More Time

Factor Hue Hoi An
Nights recommended 1 3
Main appeal Imperial history, food Atmosphere, tailoring, beach
Best weather Feb–Apr, Aug–Sep Mar–Aug
Walkability Spread out, need Grab Fully walkable
Evening atmosphere Quiet The headline attraction
Skip if... Short on time Uninterested in shopping/beaches

Hue rewards a single intense day. Hoi An rewards slowness. Reverse this ratio at your peril.

What to Skip on a 10-Day Trip

Sapa. A 6-hour bus or overnight train each way for what is essentially a mountain trekking destination. It deserves 3 nights minimum. Save it for a future trip or a 14-day itinerary.

Phong Nha caves. Genuinely spectacular but adds an awkward 6-hour detour from Hue. Doable only by sacrificing Halong Bay.

Saigon and the Mekong. Different country in feel. Two flights, three nights minimum to do it justice. Pair it with Phu Quoc or Cambodia on a separate trip.

Mai Chau / Pu Luong. Beautiful, but redundant when Ninh Binh delivers similar scenery at a fraction of the travel time.

A second Halong Bay night. Two-night cruises sound luxurious but day two repeats day one. Use that night for Hue instead.

Tip: The single biggest itinerary mistake is keeping Halong Bay AND adding Saigon on a 10-day trip. Pick one.

When to Go

March–April: The best overall window. Dry across all four destinations, mild in the north, warm in Hoi An.

May–June: Hot and humid in the north, perfect for Central Vietnam beaches. Halong has occasional summer storms.

September–October: Risky. Central Vietnam typhoon season can flood Hoi An. Postpone if a typhoon warning appears within 7 days of departure.

November–February: Cool and often drizzly in Hanoi and Halong (10–18°C in January). Hoi An is cloudy but pleasant. Cruises still operate; pack layers.

Tip: Avoid the Tet holiday week (around Feb 17, 2026). Many restaurants, museums, and shops close for 3–5 days, and domestic transport prices double.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 10 days enough for Vietnam? For the North-to-Center route described above, yes. For seeing the entire country (north, center, and south), no — that needs 16–18 days minimum to be enjoyable.

Should the trip start in Hanoi or Danang? Hanoi. Starting north and ending south puts the most logistically complex segment (Halong Bay) early when energy is high, and ends at a beach town where exhaustion is welcome.

Is the night train from Hanoi to Hue safe and comfortable? Yes. Soft sleeper cabins have four berths, lockable doors, fresh bedding, and air conditioning. The carriages aren't luxurious but they're clean and functional. Book through the official Vietnam Railways site or a reputable agent.

Do tourists need a visa for 10 days in Vietnam? Most Western nationalities (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea, and others) get 45-day visa-free entry as of 2026. US, Canadian, Australian, and most other passport holders need an e-visa (US$25 single-entry, processed in 3 business days at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn).

Is Halong Bay worth it given the crowds? Yes, but choose Lan Ha Bay or the southern Halong routes over the heavily trafficked central area. The karst scenery is genuinely unmatched in Asia.

How much cash should travelers carry? Cards work in hotels and mid-range restaurants. Cash is essential for street food, taxis, markets, and rural areas. Withdraw 2,000,000–3,000,000 VND (US$80–120) at a time from a major bank ATM (Vietcombank, BIDV, Techcombank).

Is Vietnam safe for solo and female travelers? Vietnam is among the safer countries in Southeast Asia. Petty theft (bag snatching from motorbikes) happens in Hanoi and especially Saigon — keep bags on the inside of sidewalks. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

Final Honest Notes

This itinerary works because it accepts what 10 days realistically allows. Travelers who try to add Sapa, Saigon, or Phu Quoc almost always return saying the same thing: they wish they'd slowed down. Vietnam is a country that punishes itinerary inflation and rewards the few days carved out for sitting in a Hanoi café, lingering at a Hoi An tailor, or watching the limestone karsts drift past from a boat deck. Ten days, done at this pace, is enough to leave properly impressed — and enough room left over to come back.
